Both have similar points per dollar spent criteria. Both cards have an annual free night. The huge difference is Hyatt is category 1-4 hotel free stays. IHG is based on # of points required for a stay. IHG has outrageous high number of points required for a stay. As a result, almost nothing in Seattle for instance, qualifies for a free stay with IHG vs plenty of choices for a Hyatt. I have loyalty programs for Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Choice and Best Western. The only one to ever refuse a night on points when they had rooms available have been IHG. Also, the $200 Ambassador program only works for Intercontinental, requires a 2 for 1 discount on weekends only, paid in advance. No Intercontinental hotels in WA or OR. I tried using the coupon at an overpriced Kimpton after paying for 2 nights and it was rejected. Hyatt is by far, my favorite program.

Think about joining the Ambassador program before you go. You’re only supposed to get 1 breakfast (and a free night too) but in two cases Intercontinental gave my wife and me a free breakfast. There was recently a deal where they gave you 15000 points to join too, and you could pay with 40K points. Might enhance your upcoming Madrid trip.
PS: I’ve stayed at that one. It’s not really in the center of town so you’ll leave the hotel, turn right, cross the street and then catch a bus into central Madrid.

Last year, I used the fourth night free for the Hotel Indigo Edinburgh, Scotland and my free night at Intercontinental Park Lane, London. I had booked that before IHG put the 40,000 pt cap on for the free night. The UK trip was over the top. I can’t wait to see how next week’s goes. I have taken several trips on the old SPG which was always fantastic, but since Marriott took over count me in as an IHG fan!
